Oral Piercing Aftercare

The piercing procedure involves breaking the surface of the skin, so there is always the risk of infection occurring afterward. Your piercing should be treated as a wound initially.

To ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of infection, it is crucial to follow these instructions for piercing aftercare:

  • Use alcohol-free mouthwash to rinse your mouth after meals, snacks, and before bed for 30-60 seconds.

  • Swelling of this area is perfectly normal during the beginning of the healing process. Reduce swelling by sucking on clean ice and taking anti-inflammatory medication if needed.

  • Avoid playing with jewelry, clicking jewelry against teeth, smoking, drinking and eating spicy/acidic foods.

  • Expect bleeding, tenderness, and secretion of blood/plasma, lymph, and dead cells. This is a normal part of the healing process.

  • Once initial swelling has gone down, a shorter post is a MUST. Jewelry that fits more closely is less likely to irritate your mouth or get between your teeth and be bitten.

  • Check your jewelry daily, with CLEAN HANDS, to ensure the heads/balls are secure. Do not twist or play with your jewelry. This will prolong the healing process and could cause infection.

  • Piercings tend to have a series of ups and downs during healing by seeming fully healed and then regressing. Be patient and clean during the initial healing time, even if the piercing seems to be healed. Each body is unique and healing times can vary considerably.

  • If you notice signs of infection, such as excessive redness or swelling, consult your physician promptly.

  • If you have questions, use out contact form or call 910-945-9557.

Remember, each individual's body is unique, and healing times can vary significantly. It is essential to be patient and continue following the cleaning routine during the initial healing period, even if the piercing appears healed sooner. If you have any questions, please call us.
